The InterviewPlease tell us a bit about yourself:
~ My name is Rossana Castellino, and I am 27 years old, from Italy, and I am a Freelance Illustrator. How long have you been creating art?
~ I have been drawing since I was a child, and art has always been my greatest passion. Did you do a course/have formal training, or are you entirely self-taught?
~ I started as a self-taught artist, and then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. I then took a course in illustration, where I improved my artistic technique. What is your favorite subject or category to draw and what inspires you to draw?
~ Women absolutely! I love to draw them in fantasy and dreamy contexts! Do you use any references to create your art or special techniques?
~ I often use stock images to get a more realistic effect; otherwise I use a mirror and myself! Do you have a favorite material you use above all others to create your artwork?
~ I definitely love colored pencils and experiment with different colored paper. What are the most essential materials or brands to you, the ones that you ALWAYS use?
~ I use Derwent and Faber-Castell pencils, and Canson paper. What is your favorite subject to draw?
~ Fantasy Characters. What do you find the hardest or most troublesome aspect of drawing/creating art?
~ Faces and hands above all, it is very difficult to create the right expressiveness. Do you have a particular color palette that you always like using on your works?
~ I really like to experiment with colors; I use a different palette according to the style and theme I want to describe in the illustration. Although this is not always the rule, I usually use a cold palette in shades of gray in my gothic and dark illustrations and a warm palette with a touch of green in my fantasy and steampunk works. What are your favorite pieces among all of you work or does one of your pieces have any specific special meaning to you?
~ This is a difficult question because every work of mine is a part of me and has an important meaning. "Midnight Masquerade" is definitely one of the most important to me, because it is the first self-portrait I made and I discovered, with this work, how much I love working on colored paper. Do you have any favorite artists here on DA, or in Drawer’s Life?
~ There are so many. When I opened my profile, here on DA, I discovered many illustrators, photographers, digital artists, and some of them have become my friends. What is the best Art Advice you’ve been given?
~ Keep going to experiment and give life to your dreams! Any thoughts/ stories/ advice you’d like to share?
~ I want to thank you for the space that you have dedicated to my work, it is an honor for me! How do you handle criticisms, submission rejections or unfavorable comments to your art… if and when it happens?
~ Of course I don’t pretend that everyone likes my art, I gladly accept criticism and suggestions when they are constructive. I think this is also a way to improve in my work. In what direction would you like to take any future art?
~ I want to improve more and more and try to experiment with new styles and new characters. Do you do work on commission or do you sell your work or prints?
~ I work on commission and also sell my work as prints; so if anyone is interested, contact me.
