The Interview
Please tell us a bit about yourself:- My name is Dave and I'm an amateur artist from "Nottingham, UK" and I'm in my thirties and I work in Reward Management for an international airline. I came to art late, but it is a wonderful diversion and change from my regular work."
How long have you been creating art?- I have only been painting for just over 2 years, but have been doing photography seriously for about 22 years.
Did you do a course/have formal training, or are you entirely self-taught?- I am self taught, however I did attend 1 term at a beginners art school, just for fun.
What is your favorite subject or category to draw and what inspires you to draw?- Landscapes and flowers. I love bright colors and expressive/impressionist styles. I love to show off God's beautiful world to people.
Do you use any references to create your art or special techniques?- Most of my references are my own photographs, or drawn from life. Most of my techniques involve using large painting knives or thick pastels - to avoid the temptation to do too much fiddly detail.
Do you have a favorite material you use above all others to create your artwork?- My favorite materials are my brands of acrylics or oil pastels.
What are the most essential materials or brands to you, the ones that you ALWAYS use? (Ex. a special brand of paper/paints/brushes, a special type of paper different pencils).
- Cryla acrylics from Daler-Rowney are my most essential material, along with Sennelier oil pastels.
What is your least favorite Media in working in art?- Well, there are lots of media which I haven't really used, but I am not too inspired by pencils or dusty pastels (oil pastels are much better!)
What is your least favorite subject to draw?- People - they're so hard!
What do you find the hardest or most troublesome aspect of drawing/creating art?- As above - people!
Do you have a particular color palette that you always like using on your works?- I actually don't use a palette, but mix on the canvas/paper, but my favorite colors are Ultramarine, and any yellows (lemon, cadmium, bismuth).
What are your favorite pieces among all of you work or does one of your pieces have any specific special meaning to you?- My favorites are the impasto flowers - Lemon yellow tulips or my recent Pyrrole tulips. Some were special gifts for family members - red roses and my brother's cats.

Do you have any favorite artists here on DA, or in Drawer’s Life?- I watch lots of artists, and my favorites have changed over time...
What is the best Art Advice you’ve been given?- Keep on practicing - anyone can draw or paint if they keep on trying.
What is the best Art Advice you’ve been given?
Any thoughts/ stories/ advice you’d like to share?- Don't worry too much about what people think - do your own thing and enjoy what you do.
How do you handle criticisms, submission rejections or unfavorable comments to your art… if and when it happens?- If they are nasty or inappropriate I just block them on DA and don't worry about it.
In what direction would you like to take any future art?- I don't know yet, but I would like to add more "meaning" to my work.
Do you do work on commission or do you sell your work or prints?- If anyone wants to buy a print or commission me they are more than welcome. I am not a professional artist, but I have sold 1 print so far!!.
